West Cook YMCA’s Purchase Postponed

OAK PARK, IL -- The West Cook YMCA’s purchase of 7.7 acres in Forest Park, IL, for $4.3 million was recently postponed. According to the West Cook YMCA’s Web site, the Y hopes to create a $19 million, 65,000-square-foot facility that will include: two indoor swimming pools, an indoor track and basketball and volleyball courts; multipurpose meeting rooms for dance and fitness classes; a cardio and weight training center for adults; and a family activity center with interactive equipment and educational materials for youth and families.

The sale of surplus village land stalled after the village council met earlier this month. Because three new village commissioners joined the council this past April, the council said it wasn't ready to make a final decision. The YMCA first discussed purchasing the land in 2005, the Forest Park Review (IL) reported.

Scott Gaalaas, president and CEO of the West Cook YMCA, told the newspaper that fundraising efforts will not get underway before a contract on the land is signed.
