NORFOLK -- More than 2,000 USS George Washington (GW) sailors took to the streets of Naval Station Norfolk Sept. 14 for a two-mile command fun run.

"We’re trying to establish a culture of fitness and celebrate being back in Norfolk after a successful shipyard period at Norfolk Naval Shipyard," says Commanding Officer, GW Capt. Dave Dykhoff. "We’re feeling real good about being back here at Naval Station Norfolk and celebrating that, as well as doing a little fitness."

While most chose to stop at the two-mile finish, a few motivated sailors ran a full 5K for a chance to win one of 300 specially made T-shirts, designed by GW sailors.

"I think the fun run brought up morale a lot," says Michael Gisborne, electrician's mate fireman of GW's engineering department’s. "It showed a lot of team work. I enjoy running, but getting to run with your friends keeps you motivated. You just keep going to the goal."
