The Tan Co. Looks for Health Clubs as Franchisees

Springfield, Mo — The Tan Co. plans to grow to 100 locations by the end of the year and 500 salons within five years, the company announced last month. Many of those locations are expected to be within health clubs.

The Tan Co. is offering two salon models: a small store with 12 beds and the superstore featuring 20-plus beds. Initial investment is between $250,000 and $500,000, including a $30,000 franchise fee. Royalties are 6 percent of gross sales paid monthly, and franchisees are required to make a 3 percent contribution to an advertising fund.

Dan Martin, a health club operator in Ozark, MO, added tanning beds to his facility several years ago, but he soon had to expand because the beds were so popular, he says. He decided to invest in the Tan Co. as a franchisee so that he could offer his members a full-service salon.

“Not only was everything extremely clean and state-of-the-art, but the training and support the company provided could not be matched,” he says.

The Tan Co. has 72 locations in 13 states, but most are in Missouri where the company started in 2000.
