Indiana Gov. Signs AED Bill

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels signed a bill on May 3 that requires the usage of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in that state’s health clubs.

With the passing and signing of Senate Bill 134, the owner or operator of a health club is required by July 1, 2008, to have an AED available on the health club premises and employ at least one person who is trained to use the AED and administer CPR. Owners or operators also will be required to have a trained employee on the health club premises during business hours when staff is present at the health club and meet certain requirements if staff is not on the premises. Other requirements include posting a sign in the health club indicating the location of the AED and compliance with other AED requirements.

Violators of these requirements commit a Class C infraction. The bill also allows inspection of a health club to determine compliance and provides certain immunity from liability for acts or omissions involving AEDs in health clubs.
